Portuguese Personal Income Tax Return (IRS)
Filing your annual tax return in Portugal can be complex, particularly if you have income from different sources or are unfamiliar with the Portuguese tax system. At TaxTeam Consulting, we provide personalised assistance with the preparation and submission of your Portuguese Personal Income Tax Return (IRS).
Who needs to file an IRS tax return in Portugal?
If you are a tax resident in Portugal, you are generally required to declare your worldwide income, including income earned abroad, subject to the applicable tax rules and any relevant exemptions or relief under Portuguese law and double taxation agreements.
If you are a non-resident who has received income from Portuguese sources, you may also be required to submit an IRS tax return, depending on the type of income received and the applicable rules.
Understanding your tax obligations
Portuguese personal income tax rules take into account different categories of income, eligible deductions and tax allowances, as well as the taxpayer’s individual circumstances. Tax rates and the final amount of tax payable depend on the applicable tax regime, the nature and amount of your income and your personal situation.
The tax year in Portugal follows the calendar year, from January to December. For most individual taxpayers, the annual IRS return for the previous tax year must be submitted between 1 April and 30 June, subject to the applicable filing requirements.
